TextExpander AI Feature Overview and FAQs
Overview
TextExpander offers AI-powered Snippet Recommendations, currently available in early access in the TextExpander Chrome Extension. This feature helps teams work faster and more consistently by automatically surfacing the most relevant Snippets from your organization’s library based on the context of what they’re working on—even if you have thousands of Snippets.
When you launch Inline Search (via keyboard shortcut or the TextExpander Icon), you’ll see your recently used Snippets along with recommendations tailored to the text around your cursor. That means you get the right, approved content instantly without needing to remember abbreviations or search your Snippet library. This works anywhere you’re typing in Chrome — email, CRMs, support tools, internal web apps, etc.
With Snippet Recommendations, teams spend less time searching for Snippets and more time getting work done. Whether someone is replying to customer emails, preparing patient communications, or coordinating internal projects, TextExpander delivers the right Snippet the moment it’s needed—leading to faster responses and more consistent messaging.

FAQs
Overview & Availability
What are the new AI-powered features in TextExpander?
Currently, AI-powered Snippet Recommendations is in early access in the TextExpander Chrome Extension. This feature automatically surfaces the most relevant Snippets from your library based on the context of what you’re working on, even if you have thousands of Snippets.
For example:
- If you’re writing an email about scheduling a meeting, TextExpander will recommend Snippets related to meeting scheduling, such as a meeting invitation Snippet or a Snippet with your calendar link.
- If you’re responding to a patient question about appointment preparation, TextExpander will recommend Snippets like pre-visit instructions, what to bring to your appointment, or insurance information requirements.
- If you’re helping a customer troubleshoot a login issue, TextExpander will recommend Snippets such as password reset instructions, browser compatibility requirements, or account access troubleshooting steps.
How do I access the new AI features?
If you’re interested in trying out Snippet Recommendations in the TextExpander Chrome Extension, reach out to your Account Manager or join the early access list here.
All AI-powered features will be available across all of our apps (Mac, Windows, and Chrome) at general release.
Can I opt out or turn off the AI features? Can I opt out my entire organization?
If you’re currently using Snippet Recommendations through our early access program and would like to turn it off, please contact your Account Manager or support@textexpander.com.
When our AI features are generally released in the future, they will be opt-in by default, and organization admins will be able to turn them on or off directly in the product. We’re committed to ensuring you have a clear understanding of how these features work before you decide to use them.
Security & Privacy
How is it trained? Does it learn from what I type?
We are not using your data to train a TextExpander LLM and TextExpander is not learning as you type. As has always been the case, TextExpander never stores your keystrokes anywhere. Read more about How TextExpander Handles Your Keystrokes, Keylogging, and Snippet Security.
How are you using my data? Is my data shared with anyone?
Your data belongs to you, and you have full control over it. Your data remains private and is only used to enhance your experience with our products. It is never used to benefit TextExpander, other customers, or external models.
What else can you tell me about data security?
Snippet Recommendations uses Gemini Nano, a local AI model that runs entirely on your computer through the Chrome Extension. Your data never leaves your device—the model only analyzes the context of what you’re working on to suggest relevant Snippets from your library.
How do you work with HIPAA covered entities?
All AI processing for Snippet Recommendations happens entirely on your device. Because the feature runs locally, no patient data or other protected health information (PHI) ever leaves your computer—it’s never transmitted to TextExpander servers or any third-party AI services.
Customization & Control
There are two areas to input additional context so Snippet creation is tailored to your organization’s voice, tone, etc.:
- Instructions: Instructions are the direct commands you give. They define the task, the goal, and the desired output format.
- For example: Never use exclamation points. Always use numbered bullets.
- Context: Context is the background information, data, and constraints.
- For example: I am a support representative. Your company’s knowledge base.
Can I use a different LLM provider?
We are currently exploring this and in future iterations, we may have an option for you to bring your own model.
Technical Functionality
What LLM is powering these features?
Gemini Nano powers Snippet Recommendations and runs entirely within the Chrome Extension on your computer. It analyzes what you’re working on to identify relevant Snippets from your library.
How does it pull data from my browser and read the context around my cursor?
TextExpander reads the HTML of the Chrome page you are on and uses it to suggest Snippets and prompts. It only reads your current page, not your browsing history or other tabs. It’s private, as this process happens entirely on your device. It is also smart in that it understands the context of information on your page, not just the words.
Think of any webpage as having a hidden, organized outline called the DOM. This outline labels every part of the page: headings, paragraphs, links, buttons, etc. The AI in TextExpander instantly reads this outline on the webpage you’re currently viewing. This lets it understand the page’s structure and pinpoint the relevant context for Snippet recommendations.
Pricing
How much does it cost to use Snippet Recommendations during the early access period?
