Why Time-Track?
There are many benefits to using time-tracking software, including more accurate estimations & billing, a clear overview of where you spend your time and even an overall boost in productivity. We’ve gathered four tips on tracking your work hours, for new and experienced time-trackers alike. For a master list of productivity tips, you can check out our post on clearing your mind with Kanban and other productivity pointers.
Be Honest about Breaks
If you walk away from your desk or scroll through Twitter for a little too long, log it!
Keep your data accurate by being honest with yourself about how much time you’re actually spending on a project. Logging accidental and planned breaks will help provide accurate estimates for future projects. Try allocating a timer for ‘Downtime’ and hit it whenever you’re taking a quick break.
Use TextExpander for Frequent Tasks
Remove any friction from time-tracking by setting up those magic TextExpander snippets for frequent tasks you’re tracking, to make entering tasks into your time-tracker faster and easier.
Add Timers into Your To-do Manager
Frequently forget to start timers? Add ‘Start timer’ to your to do manager to give yourself little prompts to track those minutes.
Bonus tip: If you use a workflow manager such as Siri Shortcuts, make the first element of any work-related workflow a reminder to hit that time-tracking button.
Review Timers When a Task Is Done
We’ve all started a task and got swept up with dealing with something else.
When a task is completed, check your timer is named accurately. You may have intended to be researching, but perhaps an email came in while you were reading and you spent some time chatting back and forth. Check the label correctly describes your actions and if not, tweak.
